Carus Thompson @ The Vanguard 10/4/11

Opening up proceedings tonight was Leena from Melbourne. Tonight Leena left her band back in Melbourne and performed her sweet folk songs solo acoustically. Her songs of unrequited love and a freckle were pleasant to listen to. Her voice is beautiful and is well worth checking out when she returns with her guitarist in May.
Next was Yanto Shortiis who voice strikes a similar tone as to Xavier Rudd. His storytelling style of lyrics and impressive musicianship were on show during the standout tracks ‘Postcode’ (a song about moving away from home), ‘The Departed’ and the country tune ‘Guitar & Go’. Good songwriter, good musician, good singer. Perfect for The Vanguard.
Yanto served double duty tonight backing up as guitarist for Carus’ band. Carus’ sound is best described as Alt country with a dash of pop melodies and a dose of storytelling akin to Paul Kelly. In fact Carus pulled out a Paul Kelly song in his set with a great rendition of ‘All The Dumb Things’. The set was heavy in the new album “Caravan”. Tracks like ‘Inland Sea’, ‘Imperfect Circle’, ‘Whistleblower’ and the title track ‘Caravan’ sound just as good live as they do on disc.
Carus made his way into the crowd, unplugged and unmiked for a song about a guy in prison who finds love. (Not in the way you’re probably thinking) He feel in love with his therapist and they got married in the prison. An unusual love story that Carus made sound romantic and natural in a natural setting amongst the diners at The Vanguard.
Carus really rocked it out towards the end of the set, getting the crowd up and dancing before the sombre encore finish of ‘Luke’s Song’, a song about the passing of a young man.
It was a great night of music in the intimate and dignified surroundings of The Vanguard. A venue I recommend everyone sees a gig at.
