Bouncing Souls & Hot Water Music @ The Metro 10/12/10
December 17th 2010 17:32
Two of the most respected bands in punk rock join forces to co headline this tour. The Bouncing Souls and Hot Water Music have steady and loyal fan base spanning the length of their careers. And with the recent reforming of Hot Water Music, this tour was highly anticapated.
Opening with Sydney scene veterans Grand Fatal, who attempted to rev the crowd up. However they did struggle to make an impact. Their sound is not really suited to the The Metro. A dirty little pub would suit them more. Tonight it was a bit hollow and didn't come across to well. Sadly, I missed Dave Hause from The Loved Ones due to a friend being sick and having to send him home, but got back in time for The Bouncing Souls to hit the stage.
I was speaking to a guy who described singer Greg the laziest vocalist in punk. I understood what he meant by that. He wandered out during the intro of the opening track and kept movements to a minimal. No jumping around or getting the crowd amped up. He did jump down into the crowd a couple of times, but other than that he kept to his job of singing great songs. The crowd went ballistic for The Souls. The pit was chaotic and it was good to see crowd surfing again. And while I 'll claim to be too old for the pit, it's still one of the greatest spectacles, especially when watching from upstairs. Hits like 'Manthem', 'The Gold Song' and 'That Song' caused the biggest reactions and the craziest pit. The band delivered a bit from every album and solid without being special.
Coming back after quite a few years off on hiatus (bands don't break up anymore they just take a "hiatus") things didn't start well as Chuck informed us their friend got sucker punched out the front before hand. (She was fine, but still, what a dog act.) But Hot Water Music played on with intensity and venom. The sauna that had become the Metro was melting but no one dared leave until the end when both headliners came on stage to play a few of each other's songs and end a really good punk show. The show didn't blow me away but I didn't leave unhappy either. Two bands who know their craft and put on a good show in the sweatfest that was The Metro. really, its how any good punk show should be!!!
