Bone Thugs-&-Harmony - Uni5:The Worlds Enemy

I remember hearing of Bone Thugs-&-Harmony as a early teen when referenced by groups Public Enemy and NWA and winning a grammy award back in ’94. Since then, I assumed they broke up and either went to jail, got shot or started clothing lines like most rappers/hip hoppers do. So, when this came my way I was surprised and intrigued. I’ve never really been a big hip hop fan, especially American hip hop because, well generally I find contrite and shite.
Having disclosed that, let me say I was impressed with BTNH 9th album, “Uni5:The Worlds Enemy”. The intro features the great line “if it feels like the world hates you/remember i hated it first” before launching into ‘Rebirth’, a great hip hop track with flowing rhymes and great beat. The rest of the album delivers a more mature approach to their music at times leaning towards R&B especially in the stand out track off the album ‘Gone’.
Lyrically the album touches on many themes from sociopolitical to life and death and rebirth in relation to the groups reforming after splitting a few years back. The album also features appearances from J Rush, Ricco Barrino, K-Young and producers BIGBOI and DJ U-Neek.
The album flows from start to end being broken up by “The Law(Intro) and “A New Mind=A New Life (Interlude) both spoken word tracks tying together the album’s concept of us verse the world mentality. Other great tracks includes the single ‘See Me Shine’, ‘Meet Me In The Sky’ and previously mentioned ‘Rebirth’.
One album alone won’t change my opinion on a genre but this record certainly broadens my mind to American style hip hop. A great album put out by a legendary group.
