Bluejuice-head of the hawk

February 14th 2010 00:18
Bluejuice return with their second album with a change in sound from the heavily hip hop influenced first record 'Problems'. Laced with more keyboards and pop sensibilities. Bluejuice have written an album full of catchy tunes. The twin vocals of Stavros and Jake attack the songs like  a game of verbal ping pong bouncing back and forth over Jerry’s keys and the drum and bass rhythm section. The up tempo nature of the songs make it hard to not want to get up and dance, or at the very least tap your foot.

Arguably one of the best songs of 2009, first single 'Broken Leg' is immediately catchy with it's big 80's style keyboard hook and tale of been abandoned by the girls when you've got a broken leg. Album opener and title track 'Head Like A Hawk', 'I Ain't Telling The Truth' and 'Work' are the stand out tracks on an album that ticks all the right boxes for a good, fun, easy to listen to album. The guys have really stepped it up in songwriter, performance and production with this album and it's easily to see why alot of people have been jumping on the Bluejuice bandwagon.

With a bunch of great songs to play live and a developing reputation as a live act, Bluejuice are destined for success and the boys from Sydney deserve it.

Head of the Hawk is really a progression from Bluejuice's early work, they're now a bonafide up-tempo indie/dance band.

The beats thump, Jake and Stav voices combine well it's a great album to bop along to.

'Head of the Hawk', 'Broken Leg' and 'Little Emperor' were the standout tracks for me. I found some tracks, particularly 'Medicine' and 'Ain't Telling the Truth' to be lyrically unimaginitive and the songs all seem to mesh into one by the end of the album - but if you're listening to the album to dance the night away or to simply rock out - you'll really enjoy it.

Fantastic after one listen, too many more after that and it starts growing a bit old.

3/5 for me - simply because 'Head of the Hawk' and 'Broken Leg' are exceptional tracks.

Great review - and look forward to reading more from you.
