Bluejuice - “Company”
December 4th 2011 05:07
Opening with Elton John inspired piano before launching into their brand of catchy pop, Bluejuice have finally perfected the sound they have been working on through their first two albums. “Company” is the third album from the five piece that sees more catchy tracks ala their smash “Broken Leg” with funky keyboards, head bopping drums and easy singalong lyrics.
Lead single “Act Yr Age” has that great 80s style synth riff and singalong chorus’ that casual fans will easily assimilate to “Broken Leg” and yes, it has THAT video. (If you’ve been living in the dark for the last few weeks youtube it....and be prepared to be a little grossed out!) “The Recession” has a great dance/funk vibe that will make you wanna dance and for some reason I love the line ‘now is the winter of our discotheque’. One of the early highlights on the record. The other is “Dressed For Success” an upbeat track complete with harmonies and quick hand claps and like...well, all the tracks on this album, will make you dance.
The album features some guest songwriting talents in the forms of The Presets Julian Hamilton and Sparkadia’s Alex Burnett whose touches add a bit of musicality to the tunes. If that is at all possible for what is essentially a slab of simplistic pop with R&B and funk undertones. Lyrically the boys don’t tread to much serious ground. There’s no political tracks on here, no social commentary, no reflective insights. It’s all fun and light hearted as only the Bluejuice boys can provide.
The joy in this album is easiness of it’s listenability. There may not be any stand out tracks like “Head Of The Hawk” record, but thats because all of them sit as equals on this record. The only downfall is that this is a record you will slowly grow out of and I doubt will get too many spins after a month or so, but I guarantee come the next time you see them play live...you’ll know every word and will dance along. And thats all you can ask for with this record.
