Billy Talent-III
September 12th 2009 00:01
One of the best bands on the 2008 Soundwaves bill, Billy Talent teased us with a new track, the album opener “Devil On My Shoulder”. Hearing that quasi metal riff reminded of their set. It was hot. And while I think the track sounds a little similar in the opener to the last album ‘II’, it’s probably the fact that both have ‘devil’ in the title.
Billy Talent are one of the best quote unquote new bands on the scene. (Despite the fact they’ve been together for over fifteen years) They write good solid punk rock songs that are catchy and grow with you on each listen. Track two, the single “Rusted From The Rain” is a excellent track as the third track “Saint Veronika”. Billy Talent really do well at themes of love lost and scorned and emotional torment (see “White Sparrows”, “Tears Into Wine”) and can match the music with the lyrical content so well. Definitely alot of growth and maturity in the songs from the previous two records (funnily enough titled I and II). Tracks like “The Dead Can’t Testify” allow the guitar work to weave in and out without being lost or being too over the top. “Sudden Movements” and “Definition Of Destiny” are good rock songs I can see the band performing regularly live.
The boys from Canada know what they want their songs to sound like and work to create that perfect sound that defines them as a band on top of the millions of others that try to be come something in the punk world. And releasing an album in a year where so many heavyweights in the genre are kicking out new albums, Billy Talent have released an album that stands up to not only those albums but to those bands and should be seen as the ‘new school’ along with acts like Alexisonfire.
Billy Talent’s III should rate high amongst favorite albums of 2009 for anyone in the scene. And should be the album that helps launch them to a wider listening audience.
