Big O Festival @ The Manning Bar - 27/02/09

The Big O is University orientation weeks traveling festival. 6 bands touring the major universities during O week festivities. This year the line up included Yves Saint Blue, The Cassette Kids, The Fratellis, Ben Lee and The Music. (I totally forget the other band. I am a bad journalist as this review will account to!)
Due to the fact that we were in the middle of moving house, we missed most of the bands. My girlfriend wanted to go to go see The Music again. (I’ll post a old review from the first time I saw them another time) We finally got there during The Fratellis. The Bar was packed and moving around was an absolute chore. When your tired and stressed, a crowded room is not your friend. The band sounded okay but I was more concerned for getting an over priced beer. Seriously, no wonder uni students are poor when they have to cough up $6-$8 for a beer, $10 for pre mixed drink. It’s bullshit.
Ben Lee was next upstairs but I couldn’t be bothered fighting the crowd and Ben Lee has a tendency to bore me most of the time. The only thing of his I ever liked was when we released on line a cover album covering the Against Me’s ‘New Wave’ record. Even then, I prefer the original. So stiff shit Ben, you didn’t warrant enough interest for me to pay you any attention.
The Music seemed to revel in the smaller room and crowd. The singer was a bundle of energy and seemed more comfortable talking to the crowd. Even if it was short quick sentences, but it was better than when I saw them at the Metro 6 months earlier. The set list featured more rock numbers and less meandering quiet moments which I found a let down the last time. Tonight you could really get into them. The crowd lapped it up. Yes, they were drunk but that crowd surfed and moshed hard. For some it was probably their first live show and felt it was obligatory to do that. Others like myself, found them to be tools. But it was a good set and almost worth the price of admission. It had to, we didn’t see anyone else really.
