Bid Bad Voodoo Daddy @ The Beck’s Bar-Sydney Festival 10/01/10

Tonight's proceedings kicked off with Black Joe Lewis And The Honeybears. A cool, funky, soulful 8 piece with southern american blues flavor. Joe and his troops got the diverse crowd swinging and dancing early. Throwing in a James Brown cover for good measure and you got a throughly entertaining set from the boys from Texas.
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy- full of big brass band swing, jive and boogie. Thats what their definition would be in a dictionary. They got the packed crowd moving. Playing tracks like ‘Mr. Pinstripe Suit’, ‘Go Daddy-o’, ‘Jumpin' Jack’, ‘You And Me And The Bottle Makes Three’ and ‘Minnie The Moocher’ to keep the Beck’s Bar swinging and grooving along.
17 years playing together with the same line up is a testament to not only the music, but the camaraderie in the band. Here is 8 guys who love what they do. Play music that is important to them and that keeps the audience hooked. Fusing swing, jazz and New Orleans funk and blues, the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy held our attention so much that even after the encore i didn't want it to end. The nice touch of breaking out into a bit of Nirvana's ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ during the final song ‘So Long-Farewell-Goodbye’ exemplified the fun the boys had playing tonight.
If you like that 1940's style swing. Then you missed out tonight. Because Big Bad Voodoo Daddy were all class. But what do you expect by a band who play in tailored suits? Pure class.
