Beats Working - Found The Sound

Cleaver play on words Beats Working, the hip hop crew from Newcastle? with their debut long player Found The Sound. I saw these guys play real early and during the heat of the midday sun at Groovin the Moo this year and was impressed with their set. So when this album came my way I was a tad excited. Sadly that was short lived. While this certainly isn’t a lemon of a record, it doesn’t quite maintain the levels of interest over the 70 minutes that this record goes for. That could be the first problem.....it’s too long.
Beats Working certainly have a ear for a rhyme and for a beat. There’s no questioning that. And their DJ will only improve in skills as he discovers more samples and beats, but this album lacks any punch when it comes to the samples and the songs suffer from that. “It’s War” starts off promising reminding me a little of Bliss N Eso and decent enough groove to inspire a bit of impromptu dancing. But after that it slowly descends. Each track feels like its a tad forced and I honestly think they would’ve benefited from someone suggesting they release an extended EP instead. I could only really get into four or five tracks on this album. That being opener “It’s War”, “Lazy Days”, the polka feel of “Facing The Dock” and one of the last tracks “Dreams”
If I can give anything positive about this record is that the boys certainly have enough talent that in years to come, we’ll be talking about how good they are and place them in the same sentence as Bliss N Eso, Muph & Plutonic and Hilltop Hoods. But sadly, this one just sits there, run of the mill, and offers little in originality. I wish I could like this more because I was so impressed by them live, but sadly I can’t.
