Ani DiFranco @ The Enmore

I'll be honest, I don't know much of Ani's work or back catalogue. I've a heard a few tracks on triple j or through protest/political compliation cd's, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was half thinking an angry woman doing performance poetry over folk music. I was expecting leftist political thought and environmental vegan hippy leanings. What I wasn't expecting was a 2 hour set of beautifully crafted and performed songs that eventually got the seated audience up out of their seats by the end. Oh, and a man in koala suit. Always an added bonus.
First up on stage was Matt Kelly. His short set of acoustic songs was a nice lead into the main act. His songs were heavy in mood and felt like he was inspired by some classic brooding musicians such as Nick Cave or PJ Harvey. He even ended his 6 song set with a fantastic version of PJ's 'The Mess We're In'. Simple and effective and good opener to DiFranco.
It was with little fanfare when 4 musicians rushed on stage led by the diminutive Ani Difranco. A quick hello and straight in to her set. She mixed up for the fans playing older numbers mixed in with tracks from the last album, which a friend told me was more mellow since she had the kid, and we were even treated to a couple of new numbers. One, inspired by the election of President Obama and one for her family. Difranco herself was mesmerising. For such a small stature of a woman she commanded the stage. Her unique guitar strumming, attacking the strings like a cat attacks a ball of wool, her amazing voice and quality of musicanship in the band, the 2 hours seemed to fly by without anyone noticing. The appreciative fans who have waited 4 or so years to see her perform lapped it up. Even at the end a guy dressed in a koala suit came out to the merch stand and started dancing around. Why? not to sure, but does it really matter? No. The show rocked
