Alkaline Trio - this addiction

March 25th 2010 11:53
Sometimes there really is beauty in darkness and beauty in simplicity. Alkaline Trio are a formula punk band. Always have been. The themes will be dark without being sadistic. Violent but romantic. The songs will be catchy and get stuck in your head, the lyrics at times will sound cheesy and be like high school poetry. But thats why fans love Alkaline Trio. Over the years the band has grown a loyal fan base. 'This Addiction' sees the band’s 7th album and first through their own label Heart & Skull.

The album kicks off with the title track. A racy, old school Alkaline song with a great hook and chorus. This is followed by 'Dine, Dine My Darling' which is obviously a rip off of the Misfits title but a solid track sung by Dan, who vocally I have always thought suited some of the songs more than Matt. Not taking anything away from Matt's voice. But on this record, Dan only lends his voice to 3 tracks.

'Lead Poisoning' is typical upbeat NOFX style punk song that includes a new feature for Alkaline Trio-trumpets. 'Dead On The Floor' is very reminiscent of the tracks that made up their last record "Agony & Irony", slower more riff orientated rock song. "The American Scream" musically and lyrically, is one of the strongest on the album once you've given it a try. Dan sings on 'Off The Map', a song about perseverance in relationships. ‘Draculina’ at first I found silly (refer to cheesy lyrics comment earlier) but the more you listen to it, the more you can appreciate it’s charm.

‘Eating Me Alive’ again sees some new Alkaline territory with the great use of 80’s synthesizers. ‘Piss And Vinegar’ and ‘Dorothy’ sits back in that typical sound they’ve crafted over the years and the album finishes with brilliant ‘Fine’. Overall you get 11 solid tracks which is what you come to expect from Alkaline Trio. Does it top some of their older albums, probably not but again, you can’t fault it. It definitely doesn’t grab you as instantly as a “Crimson” or “Good Mourning” but with a few plays on the iPod, it grows on you.
