Alexisonfire-old crows/young cardinals

September 6th 2009 07:05
How much musical talent can one group have? For Alexisonfire it is more than anyone group of men should have. They have 2 amazing and contrasting vocalists. One, (George Pettit) has a hardcore growl that rips and shreds and is the voice of a demon. The other, Dallas, has a clean, melodic vocal a man could have and is the voice of an angel. They have two guitarists (the other guitarist doe some vocal duties as well) that can lay on thick riffs, chunky power chords and spiraling solos and a rhythm section that holds it all together to create one of the best records I’ve heard this year.

Alexisonfire has been growing their rapid fan base over the last four or five years and this record, “old crows/young cardinals” is their fourth release following on from 2006’s “crisis” . Eleven tracks that show where the band has come from sonically and where it will go in the future. I read one review which likened there growth in the same vein of U2’s musical growth (and not the growth of their egos or wallets), which I thought was ridiculous but the way the songs move you and the way they are moulded and crafted, the analogy may not be so wrong. Tracks like “The Northern” and “Emerald Street” are not your typical 3 minute hardcore track. At times it almost sounds ethereal and expand on simple sounds and build up to a climax like a good story or movie. The duel title tracks “Old Crows” and “Young Cardinals” are stand outs and really kick this record off in style.

“No Rest” and “Midnight Regulations” are solid tracks and the closer “The Burial” bookends the record perfectly. The band have really learned how to utilize the two vocal styles and now compliment each other, where as in the past, I found it a unique novelty for a punk band, but essentially failed to win this reviewer over. The songs are tight and never feel rushed or sloppy as can happen when a band churns out so much material. (the group also have plenty of solo and side projects including City And Colour, The Black Lungs and Fucked Up) And with the announcement of these guys coming out for Soundwaves next year, I will be sure to catch them and think you should to because they are going to be huge!!!
