After The Fall- in[exile]
October 12th 2009 07:15
After a lengthy absence from the Australian music scene, Central Coasts After The Fall have returned with a brand new album 'in [exile]'. During the time away the band have moved to the bigger label Roadrunner Records (which I find a bit odd as it’s the home of extreme metal bands.) and spent time crafting some of their best songs to date in their career. The first half of the album instantly reminded me of Muse's take on stadium rock. Big, full sounding tracks with grandiose vocals. (Check out tracks ‘Desire’ and ‘Digital Age’) The music is given room to breathe underneath the lyrics and shows a maturity in the songwriting. The second half of the album becomes more lighter in sound and borders on pop/rock songs such as ‘1969’ and ‘Lullaby’. A direction not seen before from previous After The Fall albums.
At first listen it sounds as if the band are trying too hard to wear their new influences on their sleeve. HInts of Muse, AFI, U2 and Placebo can be heard through the songs. But on continued listens, the mix sounds new for the band and a platform to build the second phase of their career. Slick production, well crafted and labored songs and plenty of passion bring this, their 3rd album to life. And with the summer festival period just beginning, expect to see After The Fall play most of these shows. Long time fans will appreciate this record and with some airplay and playing the festivals should see the band win back some old fans who thought they had called quits and some new ones along with it.
After The Fall have returned with an album that will surely see the band relaunch themselves on the Australian public and onto the world stage. And it will hook you in the more you listen to it.
