Abby Dobson @ The Vanguard 01/10/09

Sometimes the good intentions you have go astray. Sometimes you say to yourself, “I’m going to have a quiet night. Catch up with some friends, go home early.” Then you start drinking after work which leads to a weird train ride into the city sitting next to an old cross dresser and getting random hugs from fellow Parramatta Eels fans.
You then have a few more of your favorite brews with an old friend before they fly off overseas and the thought of an early, relatively sober night go out the door. You finally bid farewell to your mate and stumble into the Vanguard to catch with some more people and find your sitting down to watch an intimate gig with ex Leonardo’s Bride vocalist Abby Dobson.
Now, I won’t lie. I had completely forgotten about her former band or herself for that matter. But I dare say I won’t make the same mistake after tonight. Abby has a wonderful voice that soars above the room and settles down like a feather falling from the sky. Her talent as a songwriter really shines through in an solo setting where her backing band allow the songs to grow and grab the audience without stealing the singers limelight.
The Vanguards surroundings makes the event more relaxed and laid back. So laid back I found myself with a good glass of whisky in my hand and fighting the temptation to lay back and close my eyes and just drift off into sleep. Supported by Lanie Lane who performed brilliantly in her own right, my quiet night saw me get back home at about 1 the next afternoon.
Got to love plans that change for the better.
