Abbe May - “Design Desire”
July 22nd 2011 23:57
West Australian songstress Abbe May has released an engaging, polished lo-fi record of dirty sexy numbers that has a slighty haunting touch and definitive nod to one Ms PJ Harvey. Abbe’s voice moves from sweet and lovely to bitter and spiteful making you think you would never want to piss her off or break her heart.
“No Sleep Tonight” has a lazy, creepy guitar line behind her sultry siren song voice. It creates a dark dreamscape mood. Lead single “Mammalian Locomotion” has a dirty sleazy blues riff with some Jack White inspired screeching guitar solos. “You Could Be Mine” has that PJ Harvey feel with elements of The Pretenders. “Feeling Like A Man,Looking Like A Woman” is a great tale of a drag queen and his/her battles with the person he/she is.
For some reason this album makes me think of the Quentin Tarantino movie Natural Born Killers. The songs seem to fit the mood of that movie. There’s fire, there’s passion, there’s intensity and there is some great tracks on here. Touring next month, this is another fantastic W.A artist you need to check out.
