A Taste Of Lilith Fair @ Enmore Theatre 04/10/10

Lilith Fair is the brain child of Sarah McLachlan who created an all female artist festival to showcase the power and strength of woman in music today. It also aims to raise money for charities such as Breast Cancer research, Ovarian Cancer research and Violence against woman. Having toured successfully across America and Canada, Lilith made it’s first trip down to Australia with The Verses, Kate Miller-Heidke and founder Sarah McLachlan.
The Verses, fronted by ex-Killing Heidi front woman Ella Hooper and members of veteran Melbourne rockers Even, delivered a solid indie rock set with a tinge of pop to kick off the night. Ella’s voice is still amazing and it’s good to see her back in music.
Kate Miller-Heidke returns from a succession of tours across Japan, America and Europe. Being back at home, Kate felt relaxed and delivered a brilliant and entertaining set. Behind the big hit ‘Last Day On Earth’ are songs with a healthy dose of humour and Tom Waits sense of story telling. With her voice resembling Katie Noonan and Amanda Palmer sass, Kate Miller-Heidke performance was outstanding. Her songs are are simple of themes but her voice makes them come alive. If you haven’t heard much more of Kate besides what you’ve heard on the radio, please check out the track ‘Are You Fucking Kidding Me?’ about an ex who breaks her heart and then years later sends her a friend request on facebook!
Sarah McLachlan returns to Australia after a 5 year absence where she has had another child, got a divorce, had a fling with a younger man and recorded a new album. For her loyal, dedicated fans, they were in raptures. Singing to every word, dancing in the aisles and asking Sarah questions in between songs. While the performance was faultless, it seemed to lack a wow factor I would’ve expected from Sarah. An odd moment during the set was the fan who wanted Sarah to sign her breasts. I wonder how often that has been asked of a indie artist mid set? It was still nice to see Sarah mix it up with new songs, older tracks and opened by the beautiful ‘Angels’.
What the night provided was what it promoted. A taste of the Lilith Fair festival. Hopefully it is enough to inspire Sarah to come back with the full scale festival.
